It’s been a strange 2020. Wearing masks and keeping our distance from each other when flying, no club meetings at the Firehouse, only one Fun Fly this fall, no auction, and no end of year Holiday Party. We’ve all made the best of it with more time spent building, bi-weekly zoom catch ups with some great presentations about R/C and aviation in general, and for some of us its even meant the ability to go fly more. With the end of the year approaching, one thing we can count on are elections – no, not THOSE elections, but NVRC‘s annual board member elections.
As usual, nominations will be due by the October meeting and board member elections will be held in November. In addition, the October meeting will feature a vote on adding a second shelter to Poplar Ford, installing pavers to provide a dry, solid surface to the shelter(s), and a proposal to establish a real-time weather station at Poplar Ford.
Meeting Schedule:
1) The October meeting will be held on Thursday, October 15th at 7:30 PM via zoom. This is the Zoom link for the meeting (https://us02web.zoom.us/j/4690492803) and the meeting pass code is the same as the gate combination.
2) Club Officer nominations are due by the end of the meeting. There will be an opportunity for nominations during the Zoom meeting, or members can email NVRC.club@gmail.com to offer nominations before the meeting date/time. Email nominations will still need to be seconded by either a 2nd email from another member to by someone participating in the Zoom meeting.
3) Vote for a second shelter at Poplar Ford (or waiting until NVRC is removed from Lorton and relocate the existing shelter)
4) Vote for installing pavers at the existing shelter at Poplar Ford (and for the 2nd shelter if approved by vote previously)
5) Discussion about a weather station at Poplar Ford.
We expect everyone to be respectful during the Zoom meeting and defer to the meeting moderator. Members will be on mute when they enter the meeting and we request they remain on mute until they have a comment. If there are too many comments all at once, members will use the chat function to request to speak.
Voting will be done through online polling in the zoom meeting.
Shelter information:
As some of you may be aware, the county has approved a second shelter for Poplar Ford. The cost of a second shelter will be approximately $1,900 based on the most recent shelter installed at Lorton. A second shelter at Poplar Ford will be handy for larger gatherings and FPV events, especially in the summer months. Due to fewer events in 2020, the club has some excess funds that can be applied to the shelter.
Pavers for the shelter Information:
Even with the shelter, it can sometimes get a little wet under the shelter when the weather is poor. It has been recommended that we install paver stones under the shelter to provide a dry and solid surface for the picnic tables and chairs. Paving per shelter is estimated to cost about $800. We are only considering paving 1 or 2 shelters at Poplar Ford. We are not discussing Lorton improvements currently due to uncertainty about Lorton’s future in the next few years.
Weather Station:
Thanks to the support of our friends at LCAA, we’ve got a plan to establish a HAM radio connected real-time weather station at Poplar Ford field. Depending on some radio testing (or donations if we can find them) the project as proposed should be no more than $770.
